Dobutamine stress echocardiogram instructions
Here’s what you need to know, and do, if your doctor orders a Dobutamine stress echocardiogram test:
- Do not eat or drink anything four hours before the test. If the test is scheduled for the afternoon, you may eat a light breakfast.
- Please wear a two piece outfit
- You will have one IV in your hand or arm.
- EKG leads will be applied to the chest.
- Your blood pressure will be taken frequently throughout the test.
- You will be given an IV medication (Dobutamine) that will mimic the body’s response to exercise.
- Ultrasound images will be taken initially and at various stages throughout the test.
- The test will take approximately one hour to complete.
- You should receive your results within five to seven business days.
What else do I need to know?
This test will help the physician evaluate the arteries of your heart. Any side effects related to Dobutamine are easily reversed by turning off the infusion, as it is very short-acting.
